Five Terps Join NFL Teams

Five Terps Join NFL Teams

The Green Bay Packers drafted Wide receiver Kevin Dorsey in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft this past Saturday. Dorsey started every game last season and he had 18 receptions for 311 yards and 4 TD's.

Tight end Matt Furstenburg signed with the World Champion Baltimore Ravens.
Furstenburg caught 16 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns last season.

Defensive lineman A.J. Francis signed with the Miami Dolphins. Francis, a four-year starter and three-time Academic All-ACC, recorded 149 total tackles and 9.5 sacks in his career.

Linebacker Darin Drakeford signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.  Drakeford had six sacks last season and tied for sixth in the ACC with two forced fumbles.

Defensive lineman Joe Vellano signed with the New England Patriots. Vellano was a three-time All-ACC averaged 1.17 tackles for loss per game last season, had 12.5 sacks for his career and was a tireless worker on the Terps defense.
I will always remember this play Vellano made against Miami in the 2011 season opener. Vellano recovered this fumble and scored a touchdown. It was my first game on the sidelines taking photographs for Inside Maryland Sports

Freshman Outfielder Anthony Papio hit a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh inning and later won the game for the Terps in the bottom of the ninth with a two-RBI single.

Papio had a career-high four RBI on three hits. Maryland trailed 8-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but Papio came through in the clutch with two outs.

Papio sent the first pitch he saw from Virginia Tech reliever Jake Joyce over the right-field fence tying the score. But the Hokies took the lead back in the top of the eighth, 9-8.

So the stage was set in the bottom of the ninth. Virginia Tech had their closer Clark Labitan on the mound. Maryland's Andrew Amaro walked and LaMonte Wade singled. Kevin Martir's sacrifice bunt to the left of the pitcher's mound had Labitan throwing to third to get the lead runner but his throw pulled the third baseman off the bag and all three base runners were safe, setting the stage for Papio. Papio took ball one, then singled on the right side of the infield scoring Amaro and Wade for a nice walk-off win for Maryland.
